Issue of the Carroll County Republican for the week of October 23, 1857. From a microfilm edition supplied by the Abraham Lincoln Library and digitized by Creekside Digital.

The Republican, edited at this time by David Emmert, was the principal newspaper of Mount Carroll, Illinois during the 1850s.

Due to the poor condition of the original newspaper, some parts are not fully legible.

The Republican frequently covered developments related to the schools of Mount Carroll, and particularly the Mount Carroll Seminary, which would later be known as Shimer College.

Founded in Mount Carroll in 1853, Shimer is now based in Chicago and known for its Great Books curriculum, Oxford program, and long-standing advocacy of early entrance to college.
